Here at Glenn-Evers Performance Poodles we strive to produce high-quality dogs with superior confirmation, while maintaining performance abilities. It is our goal to produce a dog that can go to the show ring one weekend, then perform in the obedience ring, work as a service/therapy dog, or hunt the dove field and duck blind the following weekend.
Our dogs are family pets first and foremost! Raised in our home with our 4 children and 2 chihuahuas. It can seem a little chaotic at times, but we wouldn't have it any other way. Our dogs tag along on family outings, help with farm/ranch chores, and hunt a variety of game animals depending on the season. Our puppies are heavily socialized to people as this is a family endeavor. We believe that environmental socialization with new stimuli on a regular basis (evaluating what the puppies can handle) makes for a much more stable dog long term.
I grew up in a hunting family and I've hunted with many dogs in my life. My absolute favorite part of the hunt was watching an outstanding dog perform using natural instinct and a little bit of training. The hunt provided an unforgettable experience... and harvesting a few birds was the icing on the cake. My father always had labradors and even maintained a few stud dogs while I was growing up. He working closely with a local breeder and that fascinated me.
My wife grew up in the hunting world as well. When she was a little girl her daddy bred, showed, and hunted treeing walker coonhounds, switching to labradors later in life. It was almost expected that we would end up with a labrador eventually, which we did. Levi is currently 9 years old and an amazing "machine". When he was about six, he started showing symptoms of exercise-induced collapse and we knew it was going to be only a short time before he had to retire from the field. In our discussions, my wife recalled the 2 toy poodles she had grown up with as a little girl and how smart they were. I recollected stories from my father having an AMAZING standard poodle in Germany named Choo Choo, and all the unbelievable things that dog was able to do. Despite all the labradors we had, dad always seemed to long for another dog just like to Choo Choo.
As our discussion progressed, it became obvious that a standard poodle was the way to go - my wife wanted a large dog in the house that didn't shed (labs shed TERRIBLY) and I wanted a working dog to take Levi's place in the field. (1 side note, I find that field bred American labradors do not have much of an "off" switch where as poodles do) So the search began! It became apparent very quickly that it's hard to find hunting quality or performance level dogs, especially at an affordable price. After doing rigorous research, we finally fell upon a breeder, via recommendation from a lady in California, and she felt confident she had a pup that would fit our needs. In November of 2018, we purchased Maggie, who is now our foundation female. We were amazed from the onset. I've been around a lot of dogs in my life and this is the first dog I've owned that I could LITERALLY watch think as we trained! Over the next few years, we maintained a relationship with our breeder, who has since become my mentor. After much deliberation, health tests, and patience, we decided it was time to breed. We have been meticulous about the quality of dogs we've put back into our program, trying to establish that poodle with the character traits and confirmation of a truly
versatile dog.
